About Pakistan Railways:

Pakistan Railways is the State owned railway line of Pakistan that connects the farthest corners of the country with major cities like Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and many more. Since its inception in 1860’s the railway line has served as an essential link between remote areas and popular business districts. This established connection not only opens businesses to a much wider audience but also provides the people with a reliable way to travel across the country.
History and Foundation
During the British Rule of subcontinent, the British were looking to expand their influence in the region. This vision ,which was meant to expand their reach to the remotest corners of the subcontinent, required a sophisticated mode of transport. The foundation for the realization of this vision was laid when Sir Henry Edward Frere, the then Commissioner of Sindh, proclaimed Karachi as an important seaport. Thus a survey was conducted which resulted in the country’s first railway line being laid between Karachi and Kotri City and was opened for public transport in May, 1861.
Subsequent lines were established between Karachi and other major cities such as Peshawar-Karachi line and Multan-Lahore line. These lines quickly became essential as more and more people began using them for travel and for freight.
In 1886 the establishment of North Western Railways was followed by the rapid expansion of the railway network until it covered a combined route of more than 6000 miles.
The partition of the subcontinent also brought about the division of the North Western Railway line. At that time the current railway line of Pakistan was called Pakistan Western Railways which was renamed to Pakistan Railways in 1974.
Current State and Future Vision
Currently Pakistan Railway works under the Ministry of Railway which operates more than 500 locomotives carrying an average of 10 million people everyday. The Railway also operated more than 300 trains per day for mails and freight. These numbers make the Railway stand out as the most important mode of transport in the country today. With more than 78000 employees, the Railway is also one of the biggest employers in the country.
In stark contrast to the financial prosperity the Railway enjoyed in the 1950’s-1980’s, the current financial situation is looking rather bleak. Overall the Railway is operating in a loss and requires continuous Govt. Subsidies to function.
To better the financial situation and to improve the infrastructure, Pakistan Railway was in dire need of an investment and a vision. The investment and vision came in form of Pak-China Economic Corridor. Under this initiative more than $8 billion are going to be invested in improving the infrastructure and in bringing the Railway on par with the international standards. These investments are being made under the Vision 2025 initiative put forth by the Govt. of Pakistan.
All of these efforts are expected to bear fruit in bringing Pakistan Railway to financially stability. The Railway is an integral part of the country and the rich history that it represents deserves to be appreciated and safeguarded.
